AI voice agents: answering calls and taking orders, at prototype stage

Our voice agent work is at prototype stage: we have built an AI agent that answers a WhatsApp call, holds a spoken conversation and takes an order. We do not sell it as a finished product. What we offer is a scoped pilot for businesses that receive many repetitive calls, with the same guards as our WhatsApp agents and a person always able to take over.

What we do for you

  • An honest assessment of whether your calls are a good fit for a voice agent (repetitive, structured, low risk)
  • A pilot on WhatsApp calls, built on Meta's WhatsApp Business Calling API
  • A spoken flow for one job, such as taking an order or a booking, written from your confirmed menu, catalogue or rules
  • An opening that says the caller is speaking to an AI, and a way to reach a person
  • Orders or bookings written into your tools, with a written summary sent to your team
  • Guards: daily usage cap, dry-run mode, off switch and a log of every call

Who it is for

  • Fits: takeaways, restaurants and shops that receive many short order or booking calls
  • Fits: businesses whose customers already call them on WhatsApp
  • Fits: owners willing to run a pilot, read the results and decide
  • Does not fit: calls about health, money or complaints, where a mistake costs more than a missed call
  • Does not fit: anyone who needs a guaranteed, production-ready phone line today

Where we are, plainly

We built a prototype in which a customer calls a business on WhatsApp, an AI agent answers, understands the order spoken in natural language, confirms it back, and records it. It works in our tests. It has not yet been run with real customers at volume, and we will not pretend otherwise. Voice is harder than text: background noise, accents, people changing their mind mid-sentence, silences. A pilot is how we find out whether it works for your calls.

What WhatsApp calling allows

Meta's WhatsApp Business Calling API lets a business receive and make voice calls with WhatsApp users over the internet. According to Meta's documentation, calls placed by users to a business are available wherever the WhatsApp Cloud API is available. Calls placed by the business to users need the user's permission, and business-initiated calling is not available in the United States, Canada, Egypt, Vietnam or Nigeria. Our pilots therefore start with inbound calls: the customer calls you, the agent answers.

The same WhatsApp rules as for messaging apply around it: opt-in before you contact anyone, and a clear path to a human. See our page on WhatsApp AI agents for those rules.

How a pilot would run

  1. Pick one job. Taking an order, or booking a table — not "handle all calls".
  2. Write the script and the facts. Menu or catalogue, options, prices, opening hours, what the agent must refuse. You confirm them.
  3. Test internally. Your team calls the agent with real cases, including difficult ones. We fix what fails.
  4. Dry run. The agent answers but every order is checked by a person before it is accepted.
  5. Limited live period. A daily cap on calls handled, an off switch, every call logged and summarised.
  6. Decide together. We look at completed orders, handovers and errors, and you decide whether to continue, adjust or stop.

Telling callers it is an AI

The European Commission explains that under the AI Act people interacting with AI systems such as chatbots should be made aware they are dealing with a machine, with transparency rules applying from August 2026. A caller who believes they are speaking to a person and discovers otherwise loses trust in the business, so our agent says it is an AI assistant in its first sentence, wherever the business is, and offers to pass the call or a message to a person.

What we need from you

  • A WhatsApp Business Platform number (or we set one up with you, in your name)
  • Your menu, catalogue or booking rules, and the cases where a person must take over
  • Someone on your team to test the agent and check orders during the dry run
  • Agreement on what counts as a successful pilot before it starts

What we will not do

  • Present the prototype as a finished product or promise a share of calls handled
  • Let the agent take payments by voice
  • Call customers who have not given permission
  • Keep call recordings longer than the purpose requires

Questions we get

Is your voice agent ready to replace my phone line?

No. It is a prototype. We offer a scoped pilot on one job, with a person checking results, before anyone relies on it.

Does it work on normal phone numbers?

Our prototype answers WhatsApp calls. Other telephony is possible but would be a separate build; we start with WhatsApp because many customers already call businesses there.

Can the agent call my customers?

WhatsApp requires the user's permission for business-initiated calls, and Meta does not offer them in some countries, including the United States and Canada. Our pilots start with incoming calls.

Will callers know it is an AI?

Yes. It says so in its first sentence and offers to pass the call or a message to a person.

What happens if it misunderstands an order?

It reads the order back for confirmation, and during the dry run a person checks every order. Errors are logged and fixed before the agent handles more calls.
