Web apps built for you and kept running: directories, generators, platforms

Our web app service builds the tool your business needs when a website is not enough: a searchable directory, a generator that produces documents in your customer's name, a member or course platform, an internal tool. We build it on proven technology (Next.js and Postgres), host it on our own server with Docker, and keep it running, with you approving each stage before it reaches users.

What we do for you

  • A written scope: who uses the app, the three or four things it must do well, what it will not do in version one
  • Clickable screens to validate before any heavy building
  • Development on Next.js and a Postgres database, with accounts, payments and emails when needed
  • Pages that search engines can read: server-rendered content, real status codes, a sitemap for public pages
  • Hosting on our own server with Docker, HTTPS, daily snapshots and monitoring (see hosting and DevOps)
  • Payments in one click through Stripe and delivery by email when the app sells something
  • Maintenance after launch: fixes, updates, small improvements on the terms agreed

Who it is for

  • Fits: a business with useful data that people search (a directory, a price list, a register)
  • Fits: a service that can be turned into a product: documents, letters or reports generated from a questionnaire
  • Fits: a training provider or community that needs a member area or a course platform
  • Does not fit: large regulated systems (banking cores, medical records) or native mobile apps; we do not build those

What we have built

Most of these are our own products, run on Next.js and Postgres. They are our references for the method, not results we promise.

  • A directory of more than 4,900 sworn translators, built to be found through search.
  • A sports directory.
  • Document-generation products: letters and regulatory documents generated in the buyer's own name from a short questionnaire, paid in one click and delivered at once by email.
  • An e-learning platform that sells SCORM courses and issues certificates (see e-learning).
  • Our own team's operating system: CRM pipeline, work items, roadmap and bots, on one self-hosted server.

Built to be found, not only to work

A directory or a generator often lives on search traffic, so its public pages must be readable by Google. Google's JavaScript SEO guide explains that Googlebot crawls, then renders, then indexes JavaScript pages, and that server-side rendering or pre-rendering is still a great idea because it makes sites faster for users and crawlers. It also asks for meaningful HTTP status codes (a real 404 when a page does not exist) rather than error pages that look fine. We render public pages on the server and give every listing a clean, stable address.

How we build

  1. Scope. One page that says who the app is for, what it does and how we will know it works.
  2. Screens. Clickable mock-ups you can test on your phone.
  3. First version. The smallest version that does the main job, online at a private address for you to try.
  4. Real data. Import or entry of your data, with checks for duplicates and errors.
  5. Launch. Public address, analytics, monitoring, backups.
  6. Iterate. Improvements based on what users actually do, one change at a time.

Our rules

  • Your data stays yours, in a database you can export at any time.
  • No personal data collected that the app does not need; consent where the law requires it.
  • Generated documents say what they are and what they do not replace (for example, legal advice).
  • Nothing goes to real users without your approval.

Questions we get

How long does a first version take?

It depends on the scope. We agree a first version small enough to be online quickly and tested by real users, rather than a long build of everything at once.

Who owns the code?

You do, once the project terms are met. The code lives in a repository you can access, and the database can be exported at any time.

Can you take over an app someone else built?

Often, if we can read the code and run it. We start with a short audit and tell you plainly whether it is better to fix it or rebuild it.

Do you build mobile apps?

We build web apps that work well on phones and can be added to the home screen. We do not build native iOS or Android apps.
